What Booking.com is

Booking.com is the world's largest accommodation booking platform. The key word is platform. Booking owns no hotels and provides no accommodation itself. It is an intermediary that gathers properties' offers, shows them in one place and takes the booking, while the contract for your stay is between you and the property.

That distinction explains practically every situation described below: why cancellation terms differ from one offer to the next, why the invoice comes from the hotel rather than Booking, and why you sometimes pay upfront and sometimes only on arrival.

A few facts about the scale:

  • the service began in 1996 in the Netherlands as Bookings.nl, founded by Geert-Jan Bruinsma, a student at the University of Twente
  • in 2005 it was bought by Booking Holdings for 133 million dollars, widely regarded as one of the best acquisitions in internet history
  • the head office is in Amsterdam
  • the catalogue holds roughly 3.4 million properties, including 475,000 hotels and motels and 2.9 million apartments
  • the platform operates in over 220 countries and more than 40 languages

Book through Soleback and part of the amount comes back as cashback. Current rates and terms are on the Booking.com page at Soleback.

Booking and payment

Do you have to pay upfront for a Booking.com reservation

Not always, and this is one of the most important things to understand. The property sets the rules, not Booking, which is why two offers in the same city can work completely differently.

In practice you will meet three variants:

Type of offerWhen you pay
No prepaymentonly on arrival, at the property
Partial prepaymentdeposit at booking, the rest at the property
Full prepayment, usually non-refundable ratesthe whole amount immediately at booking

This information always sits alongside the offer, in the booking conditions section. It is worth reading before you hit the booking button, because your ability to cancel depends on it too.

When does Booking.com take payment from the card

It depends on the settlement model the property uses.

On no-prepayment offers the card serves purely as a guarantee for the booking. Nobody charges it at the moment you reserve; you pay at check-in or check-out.

On prepaid offers the charge normally lands immediately after booking, or on the date given in the conditions, sometimes a few days before arrival.

On payments handled by Booking, meaning the model where the platform takes the money and passes it to the property, Booking makes the charge and your bank statement shows its name instead of the hotel's. This causes a lot of confusion, but it is not an error.

Can I pay at the property

Yes, on offers marked no prepayment. This is one of Booking's main advantages over platforms that demand payment in full upfront.

Filter results by the no-prepayment option if you want the money to stay in your account until the day you travel. Bear in mind that the property will usually still ask for card details as a guarantee, and may charge a fee under the booking conditions if you fail to turn up.

What payment methods does Booking.com accept

The available methods depend on the property and the country it sits in. The most common are:

  • payment cards from Visa, Mastercard and American Express, both credit and debit
  • PayPal
  • Apple Pay and Google Pay
  • bank transfer, in selected cases
  • local payment methods that appear depending on market and property

You see which methods apply to your particular booking at the payment step. If one is missing, the property simply has not enabled it. Properties that settle directly themselves usually offer a noticeably shorter list than those going through Booking.

Does Booking.com charge extra booking fees

Booking takes no commission from the traveller for making a booking. The platform earns from commission paid by the properties.

That does not mean the final price always equals the figure on the first screen. Additions can include:

  • VAT, where it is not built into the headline price
  • a visitor levy or tourist tax, collected by the local authority
  • a service or cleaning charge, common in apartments
  • a deposit, held for the duration of the stay

All these lines appear in the price breakdown before you confirm, but you have to expand it. Plenty of people look only at the figure in the search results and discover the difference at the front desk.

Why is the price at the property higher than on Booking.com

Usually for one of five reasons:

  1. A visitor levy or tourist tax, which Booking often does not include because the property collects it for the local authority. This used to be a continental European quirk, but it now applies in the UK too: Edinburgh introduced Scotland's first visitor levy on 24 July 2026, charged at 5 per cent of the accommodation cost and capped at five consecutive nights per stay.
  2. A cleaning charge in apartments, added once for the whole stay.
  3. Tax, if the offer was displayed net.
  4. Extras, meaning parking, breakfast, a cot or a pet.
  5. A deposit, which is not a cost but a hold released after the stay.

If the difference fits none of these, you have grounds to complain. Screenshot the price at the time of booking before you travel, because that is your evidence.

Can I book without a credit card

Yes, though the choice narrows. Booking has a filter for properties that do not require a credit card, and many places accept a debit card on equal terms.

Three routes for people without a credit card:

  • offers flagged as not requiring a card, payable at the property
  • offers settled through Booking, where you pay by PayPal or debit card
  • booking with someone else's card, though the property may then ask for written authorisation from the cardholder and to see the card at check-in

Why has money been held on my card when I have not paid

That is a pre-authorisation, standard hotel practice and not a charge. The property is checking that the card is live and funded, and reserving an amount against possible claims.

What to know:

  • the held money has not been taken, it is simply unavailable
  • the hold normally clears within a few working days, though some banks take up to two weeks
  • the amount is often higher than the room rate, because it covers a deposit against damage or the minibar
  • on debit cards the hold hurts more, because it genuinely takes cash out of reach

If the hold has not cleared a week after check-out, contact the property first, because it placed the hold, not Booking.

Cancelling and changing a booking

Is cancelling a Booking.com reservation free

It depends entirely on the terms of the particular offer. Booking has no single cancellation policy, because each property sets its own.

Type of offerCancellation
Free cancellationfree of charge until the deadline given in the booking
Partially refundablefree until a set date, after which a fee set by the property applies
Non-refundablethe full cost of the stay, including on a date change or a no-show

The rule always appears with the offer and in the booking confirmation. Non-refundable rates are cheaper precisely because you carry the risk.

How late can I cancel free of charge

The exact date and time are given in your booking confirmation and in your bookings section. The most common deadlines are 24 or 48 hours before arrival, but some properties set 7, 14 or even 30 days.

Two things that catch people out:

  • the property's time zone counts, not yours, which matters on trips abroad
  • once the deadline passes the system does not ask, it simply charges under the terms

You cancel it yourself, through the link in your confirmation email or in the bookings section once logged in. There is no need to phone.

How do I change my dates on Booking.com

Open your booking and check whether a date change option is offered. Sometimes it is available instantly, but not always.

Three scenarios:

  1. The property allows online changes, in which case you pick new dates and the system reprices at the current rate. The new dates may cost more.
  2. The change needs the property's approval, so you send a request and wait.
  3. A non-refundable rate, where changing dates is treated as a cancellation and means losing the money.

On offers with free cancellation it is often simpler to cancel the old booking and make a new one than to fight with the change tool. Check first, though, that the price for the new dates has not risen.

Can I change the guest name on a booking

In most cases yes. Changing the lead guest's name or adding a companion is a routine request and can usually be raised in the booking panel or by message to the property.

Exceptions worth remembering:

  • some properties, particularly on promotional rates, require the guest to be the person who booked
  • on a full change of the booker, some properties treat it as a new reservation
  • if you are paying by card but someone else will check in, tell the property in advance

The best habit: sort it by email or through the chat in the booking, so it exists in writing.

When will I get my money back after cancelling

The standard window runs from several days to a couple of weeks in working days, and depends on two things: who took the payment and how fast your bank moves.

  • payment taken by Booking: the platform initiates the refund, usually within a few working days, then your bank's processing time is added
  • payment taken by the property: the refund sits with the property, and here the timescales tend to run longer because they follow its own procedures

If the money has not appeared after 14 working days, raise it with Booking.com customer service quoting your booking number and cancellation confirmation. Do not wait longer, because the older the case, the harder it is to establish what happened.

What do I do if the property cancelled my booking

This is rare but it happens, usually because of overbooking, refurbishment or closure. In that situation you are entitled to expect specific action.

The order of steps:

  1. Report it to Booking.com customer service immediately, not to the property. The platform has a procedure for these cases.
  2. Ask for help finding replacement accommodation of comparable standard. Booking usually assists with relocation in these situations.
  3. Keep the evidence: booking confirmation, correspondence and the cancellation notice.
  4. If the replacement is more expensive, submit a claim for the difference. It is not always granted, but without a claim you will certainly get nothing.

A property cancelling hours before your arrival is Booking's problem, not yours, and that is how to treat it when speaking to customer service.

Can I get a refund on a non-refundable booking

As a rule no, because that is the whole basis of the rate and why it is cheaper. There are, however, three realistic routes.

Ask the property for an exception. This is the most effective path. The property can refund or move the dates of its own accord, especially if you get in touch early and explain the reason politely. Cancelling months ahead gives you a decent chance.

Check your travel insurance. If the cause is illness, an accident or another insured event, the insurer may pay out rather than the property.

Raise it with Booking.com where the circumstances are exceptional. In cases of serious incidents, natural disasters or the property closing, the platform sometimes intervenes.

What not to do: do not start with a chargeback through your bank. That closes off the amicable route and can get your platform account blocked.

Discount codes, Genius and promotions

Is there a Booking.com discount code for new customers

Booking runs no standing welcome code along the lines of "10 per cent off your first booking". The discount for a new user works differently: you get it automatically once you create an account and sign in, through the first tier of the Genius programme.

Discount codes circulating online are usually:

  • time-limited seasonal offers, valid for a few days
  • partner codes tied to a specific bank or provider
  • out-of-date content produced to catch search traffic

A practical note if you use cashback: pasting in an external discount code blocks the cashback from registering. You have to pick one or the other and work out which is worth more.

What is the Genius programme and what discounts does it give

Genius is Booking.com's free loyalty programme. Joining costs nothing, and once you reach a tier you keep it. What counts is completed bookings, not nights, so a two-week stay counts the same as a single night.

TierRequirementBenefits
Genius 1create an account and sign in10 per cent off selected properties, 10 per cent off selected car hire, flight price alerts
Genius 25 completed bookings within 2 years10 to 15 per cent off, free breakfast and room upgrades at selected properties
Genius 315 completed bookings within 2 years10 to 20 per cent off, breakfast, upgrades and priority customer support

Two things to know before treating Genius as free money:

  • the discount applies to selected properties, not the whole catalogue. Over 390,000 properties take part, a large number, but a minority of the 3.4 million on offer
  • the discount is calculated on the price before taxes and charges, so the real saving is slightly smaller than it first looks

How do I reach a higher Genius tier

Bookings have to be completed, meaning the stay must actually happen. A cancelled booking does not count towards the threshold.

What follows in practice:

  • work to a 2 year window, within which the bookings must fall
  • five short, cheap stays earn Genius 2 exactly as five expensive trips do, because what counts is the number of bookings, not the amount
  • always book on the same account, because bookings made as a guest without signing in do not feed the counter
  • once earned, a tier stays with you permanently, with nothing to renew

Does Booking.com give a discount for signing up to the newsletter

Not as a fixed discount code. The Booking.com newsletter is mostly promotional alerts, price alerts and seasonal offers rather than a voucher you can redeem.

What genuinely produces discounts is an account with the Genius programme, plus the time-limited offers described below. Signing up for alerts makes sense as a way of catching opportunities rather than as a source of discount.

Will I get a reward for referring a friend to Booking.com

Booking runs referral programmes, but they are time-limited and vary by country and campaign. It is not a permanently available mechanism of the sort many other services offer.

To check whether one is currently running, look in the rewards section of your account. If no programme appears there, it does not apply in your country at the moment.

A steadier alternative is the Soleback referral programme, which works independently of Booking's campaigns.

What are Last Minute deals and Deal of the Day on Booking.com

Two time-limited promotional mechanisms built on the same logic: a property would rather sell a room cheaply than leave it empty.

Last Minute covers offers for the coming days, usually at a clearly reduced price. They suit spontaneous trips but carry a risk: the closer the date, the smaller the choice, and prices can also climb when the city is full.

Deal of the Day and similar time-limited campaigns are short-lived discounts on selected properties.

On top of those come the regular seasonal campaigns before the summer holidays, on Black Friday and over Christmas. We collect current campaigns at Booking.com and other stores in the offers section.

Are prices lower in the Booking.com app than on the website

Sometimes, yes. Booking has for years run prices available only in the app, flagged as mobile rates. The difference usually runs from a few to low double-digit percentages.

And here a genuine conflict appears, worth knowing about before you book.

Cashback will not register on a booking made in the mobile app. The transaction has to go through the browser you opened from the Soleback link. If the mobile rate saves you more than the cashback, book in the app. If it saves you less, book in the browser. Do the sum before you click, because nothing can be changed afterwards.

How do I use Booking.com Travel Credit

Travel Credit lands in a virtual wallet on your account. Where it comes from:

  • promotional campaigns and seasonal offers
  • partnerships with banks and card issuers
  • compensation awarded by customer service
  • referral programmes, where they happen to be running

How it works:

  • the credit appears in the rewards and wallet section once you sign in
  • on an eligible booking it shows up as an option at the payment step
  • credit carries an expiry date, often a short one, so check it as soon as you receive it
  • some credit only works on particular booking types, for example only on prepaid stays

Check your wallet before a longer trip, because unused credit expires quietly and nobody reminds you.

Check-in and your stay

What time can I check in

Check-in and check-out times are set by the property and always appear in your booking confirmation and on the property's page.

Typical windows are check-in from 14:00 or 15:00 and check-out by 10:00 or 11:00. Apartments often run narrower windows, say 16:00 to 20:00, because somebody has to turn up with the keys.

Check this before buying flights or planning the journey, because arriving at 08:00 at a property with check-in from 15:00 means seven hours with a suitcase.

Can I ask for early check-in or late check-out

Yes, but it is a request, not a right. The decision rests with the property and depends on occupancy.

How to improve your odds:

  • write early, ideally a few days before arrival rather than on the day
  • use the special requests field at booking, or the chat in the booking panel
  • ask about luggage storage, because even when the room is not ready most properties will hold your bags free of charge
  • expect a charge, since some hotels sell late check-out as a paid extra

Higher Genius tiers get a yes more often, because upgrades and flexibility are part of the programme.

What if I arrive outside reception hours

Above all, tell the property in advance. That is the single most important point in this section, because a late arrival with no warning is sometimes treated as a no-show, at which point the booking is cancelled and the charge applied.

How to handle it:

  1. enter your expected arrival time when booking, Booking has a dedicated field for it
  2. message the property the day before with a specific time
  3. ask about the procedure: key safe, door code, a number for someone on call
  4. if you are flying and the flight is delayed, say so immediately

Plenty of apartments run self check-in, in which case a code is all you need. Hotels with a reception staffed until 22:00 usually want prior arrangement.

How do I contact the property directly

There are three routes and all are worth knowing.

Chat in the booking panel. The best option, because the whole conversation is documented and visible to Booking customer service in a dispute.

The property's phone and email. Contact details sit in your booking confirmation. Faster for urgent matters such as a delayed arrival.

Special requests at booking. The wishes field you fill in while booking. It reaches the property but guarantees nothing.

A rule that saves a great deal of stress: confirm every arrangement in writing. Verbal promises from reception do not exist in a dispute.

Do I have to show ID at check-in

Yes, and in many countries this follows directly from the law rather than from hotel whim. Properties are obliged to record their guests.

What to know:

  • a national ID card or passport will do; abroad, usually the passport
  • the property may record your details, but keeping the document for the duration of the stay is a contested practice and unlawful in many countries
  • when booking on someone else's card, the property may ask for additional confirmation
  • children are sometimes recorded too, so carry their documents

What do I do if the room does not match the description on Booking.com

React straight away, on the spot. This is crucial, because a complaint raised after you get home is far harder to enforce.

The order of steps:

  1. Take photos and video as soon as you walk in, before you unpack anything.
  2. Report it at reception and ask for a room matching your booking.
  3. If the property does not respond, ring Booking.com customer service from where you are. The platform can intervene or help find alternative accommodation.
  4. Do not simply check out without reporting it, because that counts as withdrawing and costs you the basis for a refund.

The difference between "the room is smaller than I expected" and "the promised air conditioning, bathroom or view is missing" is fundamental. The first is a matter of expectation, the second is a departure from the offer and a real basis for complaint.

Can I bring a pet

It depends on the property. Booking has a filter for pet-friendly properties and it is worth using rather than assuming it will be fine.

What to watch for:

  • accepting animals often comes with an extra charge, levied per night or per stay
  • there are limits on weight and number of animals
  • some properties take dogs only
  • always confirm by message before arrival, even where the description permits animals

Turning up with a pet at a property that does not accept them usually ends in a refused check-in with no refund.

Customer service and problems

How do I contact Booking.com customer service

Booking runs customer service around the clock, seven days a week, through several channels:

  • a message through the booking panel, most convenient for non-urgent matters because the whole history is saved
  • the phone, on a local or international number, around the clock
  • contacting the property directly, best for questions about the stay itself

The fastest route to a specific issue always runs through a signed-in account and the selected booking, because the agent then sees your booking number straight away and you do not have to dictate anything.

Does Booking.com have a UK phone line

Yes. The platform operates in more than 40 languages and runs support for the UK. The current number is available once you sign in, in the contact section attached to your booking.

Take the number from there rather than from a search engine. Helpline numbers circulating on advice sites are often out of date and, in the worst cases, lead to paid intermediaries or to fraudsters posing as Booking.

I have not received a booking confirmation, what now

Check the simple things first, because in most cases that is the cause:

  1. Spam and promotions folders in your inbox.
  2. The email address you entered at booking, since a typo in the domain happens more often than you would think.
  3. Your bookings section once signed in, because if the booking is there it exists regardless of the email.
  4. Your card statement, to see whether a hold or charge appeared.

If the booking is neither in your account nor on your card, it probably never went through and needs making again. If it is in your account and only the email is missing, you can resend the confirmation to yourself from the panel.

Booking as a guest without an account complicates this, because everything then hangs on a single email. That is an argument for booking while signed in.

How do I make a complaint to Booking.com

Complaints work best when you take them in a set order.

  1. Report the problem to the property during your stay and record the response. That is the foundation of everything that follows.
  2. Gather evidence: photos, video, correspondence, the booking confirmation showing the offer description.
  3. Raise it with Booking.com through the booking panel, giving your booking number and a specific ask: refund, compensation or coverage of the cost difference.
  4. If the platform does not resolve it, the consumer route remains: an alternative dispute resolution scheme, the UK European Consumer Centre for cross-border cases, and a chargeback through your bank where you paid by card.

Treat chargeback as the last step, not the first. Started too early, it closes off the amicable route.

How do I spot a fake message pretending to be Booking.com

This is one of the most common fraud patterns in the travel industry, and the scale is growing. The mechanism is usually the same: criminals take over a property's account on the platform and message guests from it, which makes the message look entirely legitimate.

Warning signs:

  • time pressure, for example a claim that your booking will be lost within the hour unless you confirm payment
  • a request to re-enter card details or to make a bank transfer
  • a link leading away from Booking.com, so hover over it and check the real address
  • moving the conversation to WhatsApp, personal email or SMS
  • a demand for payment on an offer that required no prepayment in the first place

Iron rules:

  1. Keep all communication and all payments on the platform.
  2. If you receive a payment message, do not click the link; sign in to Booking.com directly and check the status of your booking.
  3. When in doubt, call Booking customer service on the number taken from your account, not the one in the message.
  4. Report the suspicious message to Booking.com so they can block the compromised property account.

Invoices and reviews

How do I get an invoice for a stay booked through Booking.com

This is where the most common misunderstanding sits, so a clear answer: the invoice for the stay is issued by the property, not by Booking.com. The platform is an intermediary and does not sell you the accommodation, so it has no basis for invoicing the stay.

What you get from Booking is a booking confirmation with the number, price and the property's details. A useful document, but not an invoice.

How to get one:

  1. Flag the need before arrival or at check-in, not after you leave.
  2. Give your billing details, plus the VAT number for a company invoice.
  3. Collect the document at check-out or ask for it by email.

Can I get an invoice made out to my company

Yes, but the same principle applies: the property issues it. One thing matters most here.

Provide the billing details before the invoice is issued. Getting a receipt reissued as a company VAT invoice afterwards is possible but means chasing, and small properties are not always willing. Flag the need for a company invoice at check-in, and better still beforehand by message through the booking panel.

For business trips it is also worth looking at Booking.com's separate offering for companies, which tidies up travel expense reporting.

How do I leave a review of a property

Booking only accepts reviews from people who actually booked through the platform, and that is the main reason its scores are more reliable than those on sites open to anyone.

How it works:

  • the invitation to review arrives by email about 48 hours after check-out
  • you have 3 months to complete it
  • a review consists of scores across several categories plus a comment
  • published reviews stay visible for 36 months, after which they drop off the property's profile
  • you can review anonymously

That penultimate point is worth bearing in mind when choosing where to stay: reviews carry a date, and the property may since have changed hands or been refurbished.

Can I edit or delete my review

The scope for editing it yourself after publication is limited. The simplest route is to contact Booking.com customer service and ask for the entry to be removed or corrected.

Separately, a property can report a review for moderation where it breaks the site's rules, for instance by containing personal data, abuse or material unrelated to the stay. A poor score alone is not grounds for removal, and Booking rejects such reports.

A practical tip: write the review calmly, a day or two after you get home, rather than in the heat of the moment after a disappointing stay. Amending it later is awkward, and it hangs on the property's profile for three years.

Soleback cashback on Booking.com and the mistake that kills it

The mechanism is simple: you reach the site through the Soleback link, book as normal, and part of the amount returns to your account after your stay and the approval period. The current rate for Booking.com is on the store page at Soleback.

The settlement terms:

  • time to register: 1 to 48 hours
  • approval period: 60 to 120 days, because settlement follows the stay rather than the booking
  • minimum payout: 5 EUR
  • claim window for missing cashback: 28 days

The most important point if you book accommodation:

Cashback will not register on a booking made in the mobile app. The booking has to go through the browser you opened from the Soleback link. Booking pushes the app hard, not least with mobile-only rates, so the reflex is natural and expensive.

Cashback also fails to register when:

  • you use an external discount code
  • you open a price comparison site after activating, because that overwrites the source of the visit
  • an ad blocker is running and prevents tracking
  • the booking is cancelled or the stay does not take place

How to do it properly:

  1. open the Booking.com page at Soleback and go through via the link
  2. book in the browser, not in the app
  3. do not open comparison sites after activating cashback
  4. switch off your ad blocker for the duration of the booking

The browser extension helps by reminding you to activate. New accounts get a welcome bonus, and if cashback fails to land, claims go through the help centre.

One caveat worth knowing: on accommodation, cashback settles after the stay rather than after the booking. Booking next summer's holiday therefore means seeing the money several months later.

Summary

Most problems with Booking.com trace back to a single misunderstanding: people treat the platform as the seller of the accommodation, when it is an intermediary. That is where the differing cancellation terms come from, the invoice from the hotel rather than Booking, and the gap between the search price and the bill at reception.

Four habits that resolve most difficulties:

  • read the offer's terms before clicking, particularly the cancellation rules and whether prepayment applies
  • put everything in writing, through the chat in the booking panel
  • never pay outside the platform and never click payment links from messages
  • report problems on the spot, not after you get home

And if you book regularly, two things genuinely cut the bill: the Genius programme, which after five stays gives you a permanent second tier, and cashback through Soleback, provided you book in the browser.
