Native version, digital upgrade path and a refreshed Super Mario Mash-Up Pack
Soleback Team
Mojang has confirmed the date. The native version of Minecraft for Nintendo Switch 2 arrives on 27 October 2026, roughly a year after the console itself launched. It is the first build of the game made specifically for the new hardware, rather than the one that already ran on it through backwards compatibility.
The headline difference is Vibrant Visuals set as the default graphics mode. You do not need to enable it in the options: that is how the game looks from first boot.
In practice it brings directional lighting, stronger shadows, volumetric fog, better reflections and richer environmental effects across biomes. Add to that a more dynamic day cycle and improved weather effects. Mojang is clear that this is a purely visual change: the blocky look and the mechanics stay untouched.
Marketplace content benefits too, provided the pack in question supports the mode.
Vibrant Visuals does not work everywhere. Mojang explicitly names split-screen play along with some Marketplace worlds and content. In practice, a two-player session on the sofa drops back to a simpler graphics mode.
If you are buying a Switch 2 mainly to play Minecraft locally with your kids or with friends, that should temper your expectations. The best-looking version of the game is reserved for single player.
The add-on available only on Nintendo consoles is also getting an update built around the new presentation. That means a bespoke Mario-themed world, its own music and exclusive skins, with locations such as Peach's Castle and Delfino Plaza.
It is a detail, but for plenty of players that pack is precisely why they keep Minecraft on Nintendo hardware rather than PC or PlayStation.
Mojang has confirmed two things. First, there will be a digital upgrade path for owners of the original Switch version. Second, saves and progress will carry over to the new version, so worlds built up over years are not lost.
The details, including the most important question of what that upgrade will cost, are due later. Microsoft account support and Bedrock Edition features remain in place, so multiplayer and cross-platform progression are unaffected.
Mojang focused on the visuals and skipped the technical specifications. There is no statement on target frame rate or resolution, and on a Minecraft build with advanced lighting that is not a minor omission.
The second unknown is Joy-Con 2 mouse control. The studio has not confirmed it, even though the feature would make obvious sense here: placing blocks precisely with a controller has always been the weak point of console versions.
The game itself is a digital release, so you buy it on the eShop. The console is worth comparing across shops, though, because Switch 2 pricing varies quite a bit, and on AliExpress bundles with accessories often come in noticeably cheaper than on the high street.
Three things to check before buying an imported console: the plug type supplied in the box, who actually handles the warranty, and whether the seller is an official partner or a middleman. The console is region-free, but the eShop works off your account region, so digital purchases settle in that account's currency regardless of where the hardware came from.
Going through Soleback to reach the shop adds cashback to your order, credited once the returns window closes. The current rate for AliExpress is listed on the store page.
27 October 2026. It is a native version built for the new console, not the same game running through backwards compatibility.
Yes, via backwards compatibility. You are running the original Switch version in that case, without Vibrant Visuals and without any optimisation for the new hardware.
A graphics mode adding directional lighting, volumetric fog, stronger shadows and better reflections. On Switch 2 it is on by default, and it changes only the presentation, not the mechanics.
No. Mojang lists split-screen among the situations where the mode is unavailable, along with some Marketplace content.
Yes. Mojang has confirmed save and progress transfers, plus a digital upgrade path for owners of the older version. Details, including pricing, are due later.
Not confirmed. The studio did not address the feature in its announcement.
Comparing prices across shops is worth the effort, because the spread is wide. Going through Soleback adds cashback to the purchase, which brings down the real cost of the console.
