A brand new lifestyle silhouette in patent leather, with six ABZORB pods in the tooling
Soleback Team
The New Balance 983 in Black/Dark Night, style code U9833M7, goes on sale across Europe on 1 October 2026. It is not an archive reissue: the 983 is a brand new lifestyle silhouette built from ideas across New Balance's own early-2000s running catalogue. This version pairs patent leather with a jet black base and packs six ABZORB SBS pods into the tooling. Buy through New Balance UK with Soleback cashback active and part of the bill comes back.
The 983 is a new model in the lifestyle line, revealed in September 2026 and reaching shops on 1 October. New Balance did not rebuild one specific shoe from the archive. The brand treated its whole 2000s running catalogue as source material and assembled a silhouette that sits visually closest to the 9060 while carrying a tooling design of its own.
Tennis player Coco Gauff and rapper Aminé front the campaign. Gauff said the idea came out of a vision meeting with the New Balance team and was meant to show different sides of her personality through styling.
Black/Dark Night is one of two patent leather executions shown in September. The other is Cherry/Black, code U9835HT, and the pair work as mirror images of each other: a warm accent on one, a cool one on the other, both over a jet black base.
Patent leather is a deliberate break from what New Balance normally stands for. Instead of suede and understated mesh you get gloss, which changes the shoe's character under artificial light and after dark.
Upper: mesh as the underlay, synthetic overlays and patent panels on top
Reflective detailing: spread across the upper, picked up under headlights
N logo: moulded in three dimensions rather than stitched flat
Stitch-and-turn collar: sewn inside out and turned, leaving a smooth edge at the ankle
Midsole: dual density, with elliptical ABZORB SBS units
Six ABZORB pods: with circular cut-outs, spaced along the sole
Wave-like moulding: running through midsole and outsole, the model's signature feature
Outsole: rubber
A steady run of colour reveals led into the launch. Shown so far:
U9835DU: the blue debut pair Coco Gauff wore ahead of a Grand Slam event
U9833M7: Black/Dark Night, patent
U9835HT: Cherry/Black, patent
U9836VQ: Thunder Brown, with diamond-knit mesh, grey synthetics and brown suede
U9837S0: a red patent version
Grey, tan and plain black executions have also surfaced. The pace of those reveals says New Balance is treating the 983 as a pillar model rather than a one-off curiosity.
New Balance has not published a UK price for the 983 yet. European listings have started appearing at the upper end of the lifestyle tier, which puts the 983 slightly above the 9060, the closest relative in the range, and the patent upper and more involved tooling explain the gap. The live figure, along with the current rebate rate, will show on the New Balance page on Soleback once retailers publish it.
New Balance UK: the official source, full size run on launch day
END.: Newcastle retailer with consistent New Balance coverage
size?: high street chain, often holds sizes after launch day
Footpatrol: London boutique with a strong New Balance selection
Footasylum: broad stock levels, useful for restocks
schuh: nationwide chain with straightforward returns
JD Sports: large allocation, good for picking up a missed size
The full list of stores with active cashback sits in the Soleback catalogue.
The maths scales cleanly. Every £100 spent returns £3 at 3 per cent, £5 at 5 per cent and £7 at 7 per cent. On a pair at this level that is a meaningful chunk off the final bill, and it costs nothing beyond one click before checkout.
For the rebate to register, open the New Balance page on Soleback first and go through to the shop from there. If you would rather not remember that every time, the Soleback extension prompts you to activate whenever you land on a listed store.
New accounts also get the welcome bonus, which stacks on top of the rebate from the first order.
App versus browser: cashback registers on browser purchases, buying inside a retailer app usually will not track
Codes from elsewhere: a voucher found outside Soleback can zero the commission, and then there is nothing to pay out from
Patent leather: scuffs more easily than suede, so plan on a soft cloth rather than a brush with this colourway
Approval time: sports retailers typically release rebates after the returns window closes
The 983 is the first genuinely new lifestyle silhouette New Balance has put out in a while, not another variation on something familiar. U9833M7 adds patent leather over a black base, making it the easiest to wear of everything shown before launch. It drops on 1 October 2026, and activating cashback before you buy takes seconds.
