Nike x One Piece “Romance Dawn”: three TNs inspired by Devil Fruits

Anime and sneakers have been close for years. Dragon Ball Z with adidas in 2018, Yu-Gi-Oh! on the Air Max 95 earlier this year, and now the title fans have arguably waited longest for. Nike confirmed its One Piece collaboration on 6 August 2026, in a way that says more about the project than any press release would have.

What Nike actually showed

An orange cube modelled on a Road Poneglyph, the ancient inscribed stone monolith that is one of the most important symbols in the world Eiichiro Oda created, went up in Tokyo's Harajuku district. Some of the characters on its face are lit in white, and together they form a Swoosh.

The post went live simultaneously on the Nike Tokyo and .SWOOSH channels, the latter being the brand's internet culture team. The caption read “Romance Dawn - The Dawn of the Adventure”, which is exactly the title of the debut chapter of Oda's manga.

The prop choice is not arbitrary. Poneglyphs in One Piece carry the deepest buried secrets of the world, they are not decoration. Rather than slapping a logo on a poster, Nike reached for a symbol that means something specific to a reader of the series and reads as a puzzle to everyone else. Fans duly started decoding the inscription within hours.

Romance Dawn, a name that means something

The collection is called Romance Dawn, after the arc that opens the series, in which Luffy sets out on his first voyage and begins assembling a crew.

That signals Nike and the Japanese side are thinking narratively rather than decoratively. Picking the story's starting point instead of the most-memed moment from recent seasons suggests the collection is aimed at someone who knows the series, not just someone who recognises a straw hat.

Three Devil Fruits instead of three characters

This is the most interesting design decision here. Earlier One Piece sneakers put characters on the shoe. Nike went for their powers instead.

The base for all three pairs is the Air Max Plus, a near-cult silhouette with asymmetric geometry, a prominent Tuned Air unit and a layered upper that leaves plenty of room for storytelling.

Mera Mera no Mi, Portgas D. Ace's power. Reports point to an orange-to-red gradient reflecting the fruit's flame-based nature. Comparisons with the well-regarded TN “Tiger Orange” make themselves, and that is usually a good sign.

Ope Ope no Mi, Trafalgar D. Law's power. The darker route, with rich burgundy overlays and subtle swirl textures nodding to the distinctive Devil Fruit pattern. A detail for people deeper into the series.

Gomu Gomu no Mi, Monkey D. Luffy's power. The boldest of the three and the natural face of the collection, with a purple and yellow pairing pointing straight at the captain's classic outfit.

An apparel capsule is expected alongside: hats, graphic tees and jerseys, all built around the same theme.

The prices being reported

Earlier reports put the sneakers at $180 a pair, jerseys around $95, tees around $45 and hats around $35. That is standard territory for a Nike collaboration with a major licence, and not steep for collab TNs.

The caveat: those are reported figures, not Nike's price list. Sterling pricing has not been published, and European pricing on projects like this rarely follows a straight conversion.

One Piece in footwear so far

The series has a short but real footwear history: Vans in 2022, PUMA in 2024, and Crocs earlier this year with a Classic Clog inspired by Luffy's Gear 5, done with atmos.

The difference is scale. Nike operates on another level in reach and cultural weight, and picking the Air Max Plus rather than something obvious like an Air Force 1 suggests the project is aiming for depth rather than maximum volume.

For Nike this is a second anime collaboration after Yu-Gi-Oh! on the Air Max 95. Worth remembering that on that one, the brand included a physical collectible card in every box. Repeating the trick with, say, a Poneglyph or Devil Fruit card would be an obvious move, especially with the One Piece Card Game riding a global boom. Nothing has been confirmed on that front.

What we still do not know

A clear caveat is needed here, and it is worth reading before anyone starts budgeting.

Nike has confirmed the collection exists, but release dates, official retail pricing and full colourway breakdowns remain under embargo. There is not a single official product image. The graphics circulating online are mockups and predictions based on reports, not brand material. The three colourway descriptions above come from those same sources rather than from a product page.

The release window is Fall 2026, though outlets define it differently, some as July to October, others as August to October. Given that Nike started its campaign on 6 August, and that the brand typically runs teaser windows of several weeks before major collaborations, a wider announcement is plausible within the coming weeks.

Distribution is another open question. The teaser went out through Japanese channels, which could in theory point to a Japan-only release. The scale of the project and the reach of the series argue for a global drop. No stockist list has been disclosed.
