What Whatnot is and why it is not a normal shop

Whatnot is a live shopping platform. Instead of browsing categories and filling a basket, you join a livestream where a seller holds the goods up to the camera and auctions them in real time. You win the auction, payment goes through immediately, and the parcel ships straight from that seller.

That changes practically every rule you know from ordinary online retail. There is no central warehouse, no free delivery threshold and no basket. There are thousands of independent sellers, and Whatnot acts as the marketplace, the payment system and the guarantor of the transaction.

A few numbers for scale:

• founded in 2019 by Grant LaFontaine and Logan Head, starting out selling Funko Pop figures
• in 2025 gross merchandise value passed 8 billion dollars
• in August 2026 Whatnot raised 545 million dollars at a 20 billion dollar valuation
• on 2025 figures the platform accounts for close to 60 per cent of the live commerce market across North America and Europe

The strongest categories are trading cards (sports, Pokémon, One Piece), sneakers, handbags, vinyl, comics, figures and electronics. Whatnot has also pushed into categories nobody expected, food and plants among them.

The UK is one of the few European markets where Whatnot also allows seller accounts. That is the decisive difference from most of Europe: here you buy from domestic sellers, at domestic postage rates, with no customs formalities.

Shipping and delivery on Whatnot

The model works unlike anything else, so it is worth understanding properly once.

Postage is charged on each item separately, at the moment you win it. There is no basket where you accumulate purchases and pay once at the end. Win five auctions in one stream and you will see five separate postage charges.

Smart Bundling combines purchases into one parcel. The algorithm gathers items bought from the same seller and packs them together, with each extra item charged incrementally, meaning only by however much the weight and format grow. On light items the next one sometimes costs nothing at all.

Two limits worth knowing:

• purchases made in a livestream and purchases made on the ordinary marketplace will not combine with each other
• large or heavy orders may be split across several parcels if that works out cheaper, and you then get a tracking number for each

What is the minimum order for free delivery on Whatnot

There is no such threshold, and that is not an oversight but a consequence of the model. Whatnot is not the seller, so it has no delivery policy of its own.

There are, however, three ways to get postage down to zero or close to it:

1. Free Pickup, meaning collection in person from the seller. No postage at all. It only works when the seller is near you, which in the UK is realistic thanks to the domestic seller base.
2. Smart Bundling, meaning buying several items from the same seller in the same stream. Extra light items often join the parcel at no additional cost.
3. Sellers' own offers. Some hosts announce mid-stream that they will cover postage once you have won a certain number of lots. That is an arrangement with that particular seller, not a platform rule.

How much does delivery cost on Whatnot

The rate depends on the seller's country and the weight of the parcel. Whatnot shows the cost before you confirm the purchase and states that it includes all costs and taxes, so nothing is added later.

Domestic rates from UK sellers:

Buying from sellers in Germany, France or the Netherlands means the seller bills in euros and the parcel travels internationally, so the rate is calculated separately and comes out higher. The exact figure appears at the point of purchase.

How long does delivery take on Whatnot

The timeline looks like this:

• the seller has 2 working days to dispatch after the sale
• average delivery is around 7 days
• the usual range runs up to 14 days
• international shipments: 1 to 4 weeks

Within the UK you are usually sorted inside a week. Buying from EU or US sellers adds customs clearance, which can cost several more days.

Which courier does Whatnot use

There is no single carrier, it depends on the seller's country:

On inbound shipments from abroad the final leg is usually handled by a UK partner of the originating carrier.

Does Whatnot offer express delivery

Not in the form you know from online shops. There is no next-day button and no paid upgrade.

What actually shortens the wait is your choice of seller. A UK seller delivers within days, a seller in the United States takes weeks plus customs clearance. When you are hunting a specific card or pair, check the host's location before you start bidding.

Can I have a Whatnot order sent to a collection point

Whatnot does not document its own integration with UK parcel shops or lockers. The parcel goes to the address on file, and whether it can be redirected to a collection point or a Post Office branch is decided by the delivering carrier under its usual rules, typically through Royal Mail's own redelivery and redirection options.

France works differently, where a collection point is actually the default and everything over 100 grams travels through the Mondial Relay network. Buy from a French seller and you may well end up collecting from a Mondial Relay point, where you have 5 calendar days before the parcel goes back to the sender.

Can I collect a Whatnot order in person

Yes, through Free Pickup, the local collection option. It works like this:

• at checkout you choose collection instead of shipping and pay no postage
• you receive a code and a QR code by email and in your order details
• you show it to the seller at handover, which confirms the transaction
• you have 7 days to collect, after which the order is automatically marked complete

Whatnot recommends meeting in public places or at the seller's own shop, keeping all arrangements inside the platform's messaging, and paying only through Whatnot. In the UK this is a genuinely usable option because there is a real domestic seller base.

Is there a free delivery code for Whatnot

The platform does not issue free delivery codes. There is also no newsletter welcome discount and no birthday discount of the sort high street chains run. Whatnot works differently and hands out value in two ways.

Referral credit for new accounts. Sign up through a referral link and verify your phone number, and you receive credit usable after your first purchase. The rules:

• the amount depends on region and the promotion running, with some programmes drawing it at random between 10 and 200 dollars
• there is no minimum order value
• credit expires after 90 days
• it covers the item subtotal only, not tax, fees or shipping
• it only works with sellers billing in the same currency as the credit
• it does not combine with Free Pickup orders

Worth noting: referral credit and cashback rule each other out in some cases, because using an external discount code blocks the cashback from registering. Before a first order it pays to work out quickly which is worth more.

Can I track my parcel

Yes. Most Whatnot shipping labels carry a tracking number, and the status and estimated delivery date appear in your order details in the app.

If tracking sits still for 14 days and the carrier cannot locate the parcel, the order of operations is: contact the carrier first, then raise a request with Whatnot support through the app. Loss in transit is covered by buyer protection.

If Smart Bundling split your order across several parcels, you get a separate tracking number for each. A missing parcel when another has already arrived is therefore not a problem, just separate dispatch.

What happens if I am not home when it is delivered

That depends on the carrier handling the final leg. Typically the driver leaves a card and makes a second attempt, or redirects the parcel to a collection point or local delivery office.

One thing here matters a great deal: Whatnot buyer protection covers neither uncollected nor refused deliveries. If a parcel goes back to the sender because you did not collect it in time, buyer protection will not get your money back. On a shipment from abroad that may be weeks in transit, keeping an eye on delivery cards is worth the effort.

Why was I charged postage more than once

This is the most common misunderstanding on Whatnot and it follows directly from how the platform is built.

Postage is calculated per item, at the moment of purchase. Even when the things end up in one parcel, your receipt shows separate lines. That does not mean you pay the full rate several times over: when items bundle, each extra one costs only as much as the parcel format grows, and some appear with zero postage.

Common reasons purchases did not merge into one parcel:

• you bought in a livestream and on the marketplace, and those channels do not combine
• the seller set a bundle size limit on items that need special packing
• the order was large enough that splitting it across parcels came out cheaper

If you see a genuine double charge for the same item, that is a real error and should go to support with the receipt.

Returns on Whatnot

This is where Whatnot diverges most sharply from a normal shop, so here it is in three questions.

Is returning free

There is no single answer, because a return on Whatnot is not the same thing as a return to an online shop.

If an order does not arrive, arrives damaged or is not as described, buyer protection applies and you get your money back. In those cases Whatnot also covers additional postage charges, incorrectly charged tax and the cost of reshipping a parcel that went back to the sender.

If you simply changed your mind, the matter runs down the statutory cancellation route and the cost of sending it back is usually yours.

How long do I have to return something

The windows are short and vary by category, which catches out anyone used to 30 days.

The categories collectors care about most, sneakers and cards, carry the shortest window of all. Open and check the parcel straight away.

Buyer protection does not cover: uncollected deliveries, customs duties and import taxes, chargebacks raised with your bank, deals done off the platform, losses on exchange rates, or orders with signature confirmation disabled on high-value shipments.

Can I return an online order to a shop

No. Whatnot has no shops of its own, so there is nowhere to return anything. The whole process runs through the app, and goods go back according to the instructions issued once your report is accepted.

Customs and tax on buying from abroad

Since Brexit this is often the biggest surprise on the bill, and it comes down to one question: where is the seller.

Sellers in the United Kingdom

Nothing crosses a border, so there is no customs duty, no clearance and no import VAT. The price shown in the stream plus postage is all you pay. For a UK buyer this is by far the simplest route.

Sellers outside the United Kingdom

Sellers in the United States, Germany, France, the Netherlands, Canada, Japan and Australia all count as imports, and the 135 GBP threshold decides what happens.

Consignments at or below 135 GBP: the overseas seller charges UK VAT at checkout, normally at 20 per cent, and there is no customs duty on top. The price you pay is the price you pay.

Consignments above 135 GBP: VAT is no longer collected at the point of sale but at the border as import VAT, and customs duty may apply as well. In practice the courier collects both before handing over the parcel, usually with a handling fee of its own.

That threshold relief on duty is on its way out. The government has confirmed it will remove customs duty relief on low-value imports by March 2029 at the latest, although the VAT threshold itself is unchanged for now.

What to keep in mind

• customs duties and import taxes are not covered by buyer protection, so a report to Whatnot will not get them back
• a card or a pair of sneakers sitting just above 135 GBP can work out dearer than one comfortably below it, once VAT and the courier's handling fee land
• buying from a UK seller sidesteps all of this entirely

When you work out whether a lot was a bargain, add to the hammer price: international postage, import VAT, any duty, the courier's handling fee and your bank's exchange rate margin. Only that total tells you the truth.

Soleback cashback on Whatnot and the one mistake that kills it

• approval period: 60 to 120 days

Cashback will not register if you buy through the mobile app. The transaction has to go through the browser you opened from the Soleback link.
